Rental Terms & Conditions

Effective Date: 2025 | Lisbon, Portugal

1. Driver Eligibility

All drivers must meet the following requirements in accordance with Portuguese road traffic law (Código da Estrada):

  • Minimum age: 21 years old (25 years for motorcycles over 500cc on certain models)
  • Valid motorcycle licence appropriate for the engine category (A1, A2, or A)
  • Minimum 2 years of active riding experience
  • Valid passport or national ID card
  • Credit or debit card in the primary rider's name for security deposit

Courage Garage reserves the right to refuse rental to any person who does not meet these requirements or who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or substances.

2. Booking & Payment

2.1 Payment Structure

To confirm a reservation, the following payment schedule applies:

  • 20% of the total rental fee is charged at the time of booking via the Courage Garage website
  • The remaining 80% is collected at the time of motorcycle pick-up or delivery

2.2 Accepted Payment Methods

  • Major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
  • Bank transfer (for rentals booked 7+ days in advance)

All prices are quoted in Euros (€) and are inclusive of VAT where applicable.

3. Cancellation & Refund Policy

Courage Garage operates a flexible cancellation policy designed with travellers in mind.

Refunds are processed within 5–10 business days to the original payment method.

4. Security Deposit

A security deposit is required at the time of motorcycle collection or delivery. The deposit is pre-authorised (blocked) on the rider's credit or debit card and is not charged unless damage, theft, or traffic violations occur.

The security deposit hold is released within 5 business days following the safe return of the motorcycle in its original condition. Any deductions will be communicated in writing prior to processing.

5. Insurance Coverage

5.1 Standard Coverage (Included)

Every Courage Garage motorcycle rental includes mandatory third-party liability insurance as required by Portuguese law. This covers damage or injury caused to third parties in the event of an accident.

5.2 Extended Coverage (Optional)

Riders may opt for extended coverage at an additional daily fee, which provides:

  • Reduced excess (deductible) on accidental damage to the rented motorcycle
  • Coverage for theft with evidence of forced entry
  • Partial coverage for single-vehicle incidents

Extended coverage does not apply in cases of: riding under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances, intentional damage, use of the motorcycle outside permitted territory, or participation in racing or off-road activities.

6. Permitted Use & Restrictions

The rented motorcycle must be operated in accordance with the following conditions:

  • Use is restricted to mainland Portugal unless prior written authorisation has been obtained from Courage Garage
  • The motorcycle may only be operated by the named rider(s) listed on the rental agreement
  • Off-road riding, racing, or participation in any organised motorsport event is strictly prohibited
  • The motorcycle must not be used to carry more passengers than the seat configuration permits
  • Riding under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication that impairs judgement is prohibited
  • Modifications to the motorcycle during the rental period are not permitted

7. Delivery & Collection

Courage Garage offers motorcycle delivery and collection within Greater Lisbon (Grande Lisboa). This service includes:

  • Delivery of the motorcycle to your hotel, apartment, or agreed location
  • Helmet and gloves included with every rental
  • Pre-loaded GPS navigation with curated Courage Garage routes (where selected)

Delivery must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Same-day delivery requests are subject to availability. The rider must be present at the delivery address to sign the rental agreement and complete the pre-rental inspection.

8. Motorcycle Condition & Damage

All motorcycles are inspected and documented before every rental. The rider will be asked to countersign the pre-rental inspection report. Any pre-existing damage noted in the report will not be charged to the rider.

The renter is responsible for:

  • Any damage not documented in the pre-rental inspection report
  • Towing costs resulting from rider negligence or misuse
  • Traffic fines, toll violations, or parking penalties incurred during the rental period
  • Loss or damage to helmet, gloves, or other accessories provided

In the event of an accident, the rider must: stop safely, contact emergency services if required, photograph the scene, notify Courage Garage immediately, and not admit liability to any third party.

9. Our Machines

Courage Garage takes pride in the condition and performance of every motorcycle in our fleet. Each bike is purchased stock, ridden and tested by our team, and refined through multiple iterations before entering the rental fleet. Upgrades may include:

  • Performance or certified aftermarket exhaust systems
  • High-flow air filters (stage upgrades where applicable)
  • Ergonomic grips and handlebar adjustments
  • Upgraded mirrors for improved visibility
  • Keyless ignition systems (selected models)
  • Full electrical rewiring where required for reliability

These modifications are designed to enhance rider experience without compromising the character of the original machine. All customisations comply with applicable Portuguese and EU regulations.

10. Safety Tracking & Data Privacy

For the safety of our riders and the protection of our motorcycles, every Courage Garage machine is fitted with a GPS tracking device and a fall detection sensor. These devices serve one purpose: to allow our team to reach you quickly in the event of an accident or emergency.

In compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, EU 2016/679), the following applies:

  • Location and motion data is collected solely for safety and emergency response purposes during the active rental period
  • Data is accessible only to Courage Garage staff and, where required, emergency services
  • All tracking data is permanently and irrevocably deleted from our systems immediately upon conclusion of your rental
  • No data is shared with third parties for commercial, marketing, or any other purposes
  • By confirming your booking, you consent to this data collection under the stated conditions

11. Governing Law & Disputes

These Terms and Conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Portuguese Republic. Any dispute arising from this agreement shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Lisbon, Portugal.

Courage Garage reserves the right to update these terms at any time. The version in effect at the time of booking shall apply to that rental.

12. Acknowledgement

By proceeding with a booking, the renter confirms they have read, understood, and agreed to these Rental Terms and Conditions in full.
